…more than just desserts…

Cara’s Cupcakes for Change was founded in 2020 in response to George Floyd’s murder. The events of that year were so grim, and so many people were suffering. A year and a half prior, I had quit my full-time job and 16-year career as a theatre professor to pursue freelance writing and directing. But when COVID hit, the theatre jobs dried up, and the time and energy required to supervise my two young children and their virtual learning left me with few reserves to focus on writing. So, quarantined with my family and out of work myself, I struggled to figure out the next steps in my own career.

The continued racism, the advent of Black Lives Matters, the havoc of COVID-19, and the relentless news of people in need, inspired me to find some small way to bring a little sweetness, joy, and beauty into the world. I craved a creative outlet, and I sought to do something that would bring no further pain to a world that seemed to me, on fire. I wanted to create something beautiful out of our collective mess.

I saw a call on social media for Bakers Against Racism. Professionals and amateurs alike were called upon to stage a massive bake sale: Bake for your friends and clients, and donate the proceeds to an organization that supports Black Lives Matters. So I started baking. And donating. And I haven’t stopped.

In 2021 I got my LLC and added a dedicated baking kitchen in my basement. I learned, and am still learning, how to decorate cupcakes and cakes. I continue to research new and delicious recipes, and find ways to create the most delicious treats, including a primarily vegan menu.

And through word of mouth, my little business grew. I still donate a portion of my proceeds to various charities, and I consider everyone who buys a cupcake from me a partner in supporting people and organizations in need. We’re doing this, cupcake by cupcake, together.

So thank you for supporting my small business. Some of those charities we have supported together are linked below.
